Inventory built for the real economy. Not the boardroom.

BalaShoppa is a local-first inventory app for small and micro businesses. It works offline, syncs when you're online, and helps informal traders run, grow, and formalise on their terms.

Most inventory tools were built for boardrooms. Not back rooms.

Spaza shops, market stalls, hawkers and side-hustles run on instinct, paper, and patchy data. The tools meant to "help" assume fast internet, expensive devices, and accountants on call. BalaShoppa starts from the opposite end.

2 Bn+
workers operate in informal employment globally, roughly 58% of the world's employed population.
85%
of Sub-Saharan Africa's workforce operates in the informal economy: the highest rate in the world.
70–80%
of South African SMMEs fail within five years, with stock visibility and cash-flow strain consistently cited among the top reasons.

Three steps. No setup tax.

BalaShoppa is designed to be picked up in an afternoon. No accountant required. No data plan required to operate day-to-day.

01 / CAPTURE

Add stock the way you'd write it down.

Snap a photo, type a name, set a price. BalaShoppa handles SKUs, units, and categories quietly in the background.

02 / RUN

Sell, restock, count. Offline.

Every sale and stock movement saves locally. The app works exactly the same with or without signal. No spinners. No "please wait".

03 / GROW

Sync when you're ready. Formalise when you want.

When data is available, your business syncs to the cloud, unlocking reports, supplier tools, and a paper trail that can support real funding applications.

A modern tool for a market that's been ignored.

Most apps assume a SaaS-shaped customer. BalaShoppa was designed around the realities of running a business with limited data, limited time, and zero patience for software that breaks.

Local-first by design

Every feature works offline. Sync is a bonus, never a requirement. Your shop doesn't stop when the network does.

Built for low-data realities

Tiny payloads, smart batching, no bandwidth-hungry assets. Designed to run on the phones people actually have.

A bridge to formalisation

Clean records, transaction history, and reporting that fits how banks, suppliers, and regulators want to see a business.

No bloat. No noise.

One job: track inventory clearly. We design out anything that doesn't earn its place on the screen.

A massive market. Almost entirely unserved.

The informal economy isn't a niche. It's the majority of the working world. BalaShoppa is positioned at the intersection of three powerful tailwinds: smartphone penetration, regional formalisation policy, and the growing need for traders to access credit and supplier networks.

  • Enormous TAM with negligible incumbent saturation
  • Defensible moat through offline-first architecture and local UX
  • Clear monetisation paths: SaaS, payments, supplier and credit partnerships
  • Aligned with national formalisation and financial-inclusion agendas

Let's talk.

We're in early access and selectively engaging investors who care about the informal economy as much as we do. Decks and traction data available on request.
